Greetings!

Silent Meditation Retreat November 8th-15th In loving memory of Tempest Grace Gayle and In support of her family, friends and our beloved community. It has been a year since our hearts were BROKEN and this meditation retreat is being offered as an opportunity to cultivate the courage and strength to continue with OPEN hearts.

As always you are welcome to join us for all or part of the meditation retreat. The schedule is posted on the website.

We will also be practicing Tonglen during this retreat and for more information on this practice please refer to shambhala.org/teachers/pema/tonglen1.php

Essentially we will be practicing Tonglen from 9-9:50am and 2-2:50pm and you are welcome to join us in the yurt or from your home. It is not necessary to do this practice for 50 minutes...whatever feels right and good for you. You may want to begin with 2 minutes for each step. There are 5 basic steps:

  1. breathing into your heart and opening
  2. breathing in darkness (black) and breathing out light (white)
  3. breathing in the pain of her parents, Jazzmyre and Mike and breathing out that they may be free from pain and suffering
  4. breathing in the pain of this community (which includes you) and breathing out that we (you) may be free from pain and suffering.
  5. breathing in the pain of everyone on the planet who has just received the news that they have lost a loved one due to an act of violence and breathing out that they may be free from pain and suffering.

****AND ONLY IF IT RESONATES FOR YOU:
  6. breathing in the pain of those who hurt and kill others through acts of violence and breathing out that they may be free from pain suffering.

Tonglen can be a difficult practice to begin because it is counter intuitive to what we have been taught. In this practice we are allowing the pain to enter our hearts instead of pushing it away. We surrender to the pain and we allow our hearts the opportunity to transform the darkness into light. So, be gentle and honest with this practice. We are cultivating compassion for others as well as for ourselves.
