the timeless message of awakening to the truth of our being. See www.adyashanti.org

African Drum and Dance Workshop
Monday, October 26th
With Kocassalé Dioubateé
Drum Workshop 6-7:30pm Dance Workshop 7:30-9pm
Join Kocassalé and company for three hours of African drumming and dancing!
If there is enough interest they will add another day so please pre-register!
Kocassalé Dioubaté is a Guinean of the Mandingo tribe of West Africa.
A descendant of the tribe's 'Griots' - traditional storytellers and musicians; the
keepers of the tribe's oral history. Kocassalé has been dancing, playing and
making music since he was old enough to walk.
He was named after his grandfather,
who was a musician in the very first national troupe of Guinea
(Ballet Nationale de Guinée) under the guidance of the great Guinean musician
Koca Bangora. From these men, Kocassalé learned to play and build the traditional
instruments of their tribe. He honed his drumming skills playing with his father, a
percussionist and singer, at ceremonies all over Guinea. Kocassalé started
his first group at the age of seven - banging on some pots and pans with friends
in the village and now he has gone on to play music professionally all over
West Africa.
Career highlights to date include playing as Head Drummer for Ballet
Kaloum Lolé in Guinea, soloist for Ballet Bougarabou in Senegal, recording
with renowned drummer Moussa M'Boum in the Gambia and playing with Senegalese
superstar Youssou N'Dour. He has also won awards from the Minister of Culture in Guinea
for Dance in 2005 and was named Best Male Artist in 2001.
Since his arrival in
Canada Koca has performed, taught, and toured extensively, both independantly and
with numerous professional artists. Koca currently resides in Vancouver where he
continues to peform and where his afro-latin fusion band Jarimba is based.
Koca’s debut CD (Duniya Ragiri) was released in July 2006, Jarimba’s debut CD
(Mami Wata) was released in the spring of 2008, and Koca’s latest album (Fieraba),
recorded in Guinea, will be out for release this November 2009.

T'ai Chi Principles For Yoga Practitioners
Friday, June 12, 2009 - 7:30pm
Presented by Ed Hoeppner
This introductory evening workshop is for yoga practitioners of any style, beginners to advanced. T'ai chi
principles can be applied to all activities. The principles, focusing on: central equilibrium,
balance, rooting, grounding, attentiveness, relaxation, fluidity, connectivity, flexibility,
chi energy, and breath awareness will deepen and strengthen your yoga practice. Bring your
yoga of any type and use it as a framework to absorb these principles.
T'ai Chi has evolved over many hundreds of years from the study of the phenomenon of
yin and yang. The dual and complementary processes of nature, which embrace: stillness and
movement, opening and closing, soft and hard, active and passive, empty and full, yielding
and resisting; give rise to all things. The mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual
states that we are blessed to experience are affected by and are reflections of these processes.
These mental and physical processes and principles will be presented in a way that
will provide space and time within each session for practitioners to independently integrate
what they have learned into their yoga practice. Simple exercises will be learned that can be
embodied and practiced for a lifetime.
Come and share this evening with practitioners of a variety of styles of yoga and return
home being refreshed in your practice and also by being in the natural forested surroundings
here at Deerheart Sanctuary.

T'ai Chi of Dance
Friday, August 7th to Sunday, August 9th, 2009
Presented by Ed Hoeppner
Love to dance? This work shop is for you. Explore the functions of coordinated fluid
movement, balance, centering, breathing, focused attention, body awareness, internal energy,
radiant energy, relaxation, and mind intent through the principles of T'ai Chi. No T'ai chi
experience necessary. Whatever your style and form of dance these principles of mind/body awareness
can be applied and integrated immediately. Simple, yet powerful exercises will be introduced that
help to embody the principles. Times will be scheduled to allow participants independent practice
time to integrate the new awareness into their own dance.
The instructor, Ed Hoeppner, has been studying and teaching T'ai Chi for over 30 years. In that
time he has received much feedback from students relating how activities other than T'ai Chi that
they have been involved in have been enhanced by their study of T'ai Chi. The activities range
from sports, music, dance, knife throwing, and more. Based on this feedback, a series of workshops
have been designed to specifically offer the T'ai Chi principles to practitioners of various arts.

Circle Dance is the repetition of a simple series of steps to music
which opens up the spiritual energy connection to the
Earth. The dancers hold hands unifying the sacred
energy of the circle. This energy creates a sense of
community, belonging, and relaxation. The focus is to
enjoy the spirit of the dance not on how well we do
the steps. We dance traditional folk dances from
European countries which have healing power from
ancient times and places. We also dance newly
choreographed dances to modern music created by June
Watts, my teacher, and others.

Intro to Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy
Energy. Light. Bliss.
Tuesday, June 30th - 7:30pm
Presented by Asrael
An introductory workshop introducing this yoga therapy. See description below.
Cost: $15
Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy Retreat
Energy. Light. Bliss.
Sunday July 19th to Tuesday July 21st
Presented by Asrael
Immerse yourself in a wonderful healing environment, connecting with breath, yoga and healing.
The retreat begins on Sunday with a session in the evening followed by 2 sessions on Monday
and one on Tuesday morning. Simple vegan/raw food will be served and there will be lots of space
for beach time and sight seeing.
What you can expect:
A relaxing and rejuvenating experience. One that balances the chakra's, and connects us to
our subtle energy bodies, allowing us to release and to heal. In Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy we use a
healing breath to direct energy into our chakras and into the parts of our body that need the
most love. The asanas are held a bit longer than in a traditional class, but are gentle and
opening, creating balance and flow in the nadi's (energy channels of the body). In this way
we go deeper than a regular asana class, we connect more fully with all the layers of our being,
and we melt into the space of peace and relaxation. Very restorative, very loving, and suitable
for any level. During the classes we will infuse our spirits with light and create a wonderful
pranayamic flow with a deep healing breath. We will open to our true nature, experiencing
the bliss of our being, the beauty of our consciousness, and the happiness of balance.
Class schedule:
Sunday: 7-9 pm
Monday: 7:30-9:30 am & 4:30-6:30 pm
Tuesday: 7:30-9:30 am
You are welcome to stay at Deerheart and to register for the entire retreat, or to
drop into any of the classes. The drop in rate is $20
Cost
Entire retreat with camping/food/classes is $175.

Things seem to simply happen to us physically and emotionally, that we are often at odds with
ourselves and our loved ones and family about how to approach. Mentally and spiritually, many of
us swim in endless rounds of thoughts about our day to day realities and our problems while wondering
if we are on the right track in our lives, whether we are actualizing our potential or not.
Many of us do not resonate with the traditional western approach of medicine and symptom-fixing
and no longer agree with their role as the former panacea they attempted to be. Some of us recognize
that in order to effect a lasting change, we must deal with the root causes of our issues. We see
that there is no quick fix that really handles the core reasons for why our lives are not how we want them to be.
The "Healing and Dealing" group forming is an attempt to work with issues both large and small,
by starting with what is on top and working our way down. Through group circle shares, exercises
and interactions we'll focus on co-creating a safe space to express what we really feel about
what is happening to and around us. Everyone in the group will have an opportunity during each group
to participate to the level that feels doable.
Circles will begin Tuesdays at noon starting on March 18, as close to the start time as possible,
and will be ongoing for as long as there is enough interest. Fee is by donation with a suggested
minimum of $10 per group. Please wear loose fitting clothing and bring a bedpillow if possible.
Tuesdays at Noon starting March 18th, 2008
Cost: By Donation, suggested minimum $10.

The true green housing revolution is Jim Traynor's passion! No one on this beautiful
planet of abundance needs to be homeless, or live in a concrete jungle, yet homelessness,
and alienation can only increase if we continue on the present unsustainable paths.
Current building-code green doesn't even begin to come close to being sustainable with
its emphasis on technologies that place a large burden on the environment. Building following true
green methodologies not only greatly reduce pressure on ecosystems, fossil fuel supplies, and global warming
they also make building a home affordable to all people everywhere.
This weekend features a hands-on workshop where you will learn true-green building techniques and
how you can apply them to build the house of your dreams.
People taking this workshop have been inspired to go on and build their homes using these techniques.
Saturday September 15th to Monday September 17th, 2007
Cost: $100, opportunities for work trade.

Introduction to Trager for Self-Healing
So much of our lives are intellectual or thought oriented; most have little conscious experience
with what it actually feels like to be in the present moment. Yet this feeling is the missing link.
When we are able to consciously and consistently "hook-up" to this feeling-a feeling of lightness,
of peace, of bliss-our empowerment arises naturally, our life's purpose becomes clear, our dreams
manifest with ease.
Join Audrey and be introduced to this missing link.

This half-day workshop will include meditation, chanting, movement,
poetry, group discussion and the practice of open-ended inquiry. Although
the primary nature of the workshop is experiential, throughout the morning
we will explore what it means to each of us "to stand alone in truth" and
how this informs our relatedness with one another. Our exploration will
utilize embodied awareness and direct, light-hearted inquiry into our
experience.
On the spiritual path it is essential to have the support of teachings
and teachers, however, at a certain point on our journeys and along the
way, we need to orient ourselves in a way that embraces the guidance,
wisdom and blessings of various paths, and at the same time is free of
all systems and concepts, spiritual or otherwise.
Discovering this orientation enhances our experience of freedom and
autonomy and heightens our aliveness, connection and personal empowerment
as we journey through our lives. When we discover what it means to
each us "to stand alone in truth" we immediately become benefactors of
the rich and abundant reality we live in and realize, intimately and
experientially, who we are and why we are here.
Cost: $5.00 - $10.00 per person, sliding scale
This workshop runs from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm.

The treasures your childhood has to offer.
Objective: to care and nurture our inner child through an objective
and tender look at the first three septenaries of life (from 0 to 21 years old),
having the biographic laws brought by Bernard Leivegoed enlightened by
Anthroposophy as a background.
Process: the work takes place in fours parts. In the first three, we
talk about the three septenaries, offering content for reflection on
these periods and hands-on time to weave on a frame loom. The fourth part is the closing when
the nest is put together, and we have a conversation linking the continuous
care of our inner child through activities that can be included in our everyday
lives, to the 12 senses (according to the indications of Dr. Gerardo A. Blanco in
"Introduction to Antropologia")
Conclusion: the final piece will be the creation of a "nest" as we put
together the three mini-textiles that come out of this experience
where all the necessary welcome will be woven to this being, that now as an
adult, needs to go ahead.
This experience is an open door to an inner path through weaving with
the questions that may show up and the wish to know oneself better. No previous
knowledge of Anthroposophy or weaving is required.
Tales and Steiner's and other authors' poems are presented throughout the
workshop, so that light and comfort may be provided to all who take
part of this process.
Cost: $110.00 per person
This workshop runs on both weekend days.
Saturday - 11:00 am to 7:00 pm
Sunday - 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Singing is a powerful way to both energize and create peace within ourselves.
Singing acts on many levels: on the physical level, we must breathe
deeply to create a resonant sound. On the intellectual level, we
communicate a story when we sing. Spiritually, the focus needed to
sustain the breath and the harmonies creates a meditative state.
In this workshop, you will spend the day breathing deeply, grounding,
memorizing, and communicating through song.
Singing is a lot more than singing when you put your whole self into
it!

Astrology and Healing: Manifesting Your Heart's Desire
Note: The following program description is for a July workshop. The September workshop will
shift somewhat to discuss the relevant information for that time.
Saturn begins a two year journey through Leo on July 16th. Also known as Chronos or Father
Time, Saturn calls us to be in time--on track with our karmic schedule and dharmic gifts.
Saturn in Leo tells us it's time to take our power seriously. Time to focus and express
our unique essence. Time to manifest our heart's desires.
In the morning we'll talk about Saturn in Leo, what it means for each of us, and where
it's going to show up in our lives most directly. After a lunch break, we'll experience
and learn some energy tools for dealing with the fears and beliefs that come up when
we approach our creative edges. Join us for a day of exploring your unique gifts and
how to work with the obstacles that get in your way.
Fee includes a current transit chart and a personal planetary flower essence to take
home. Please register and email your birth date, time, and place to Stephanie@EcoAstrology.com
before taking the workshop.

Utilizing the plant's energetic nature helps dissolve the patterns and
blocks to manifesting our own essence. Join in a fascinating evening on how
to use the subtle energies of plants as well as some simple but powerful
visualizations to increase the flow of your creative energy.
Jim will be available for personal sessions at deerheart sanctuary in September.

The Dances of Universal Peace began with the work of Samuel Lewis
(1898-1971), who lived in the San Francisco Bay area. He pursued an active
and serious study of various world paths including Christianity,
Judaism, Buddhism, and Sufism. Lewis was a student of Modern Dance pioneer
Ruth St. Denis and was keenly interested in dance and peacemaking. Using
the universal symbol of unity, the circle, he developed a form of circle
dance with a focus on breath, sound, movement, and multilingual phrases
affirming world unity and peace. Before his death he created about 50
Dances and Walks which he passed on to his pupils. Since his passing the
Dances have blossomed to a collection of over 400 representing many
world cultures. They are taught throughout Canada, 40 States, and twelve
countries abroad. The movements are simple and each dance and phrase is
taught. No experience is necessary - the only requirement is an open
mind and heart that we may "rise above the distinctions and differences
which divide" and know peace both within and without.

May 26-27, 2007 10am to 5 pm, $150
"The unique beauty and kindness of the practice of self-reflection is that it does not demand
that we experience anything other than what we experience," says Tibetan teacher Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche.
That's simple, but not easy, given it's natural to move away from what is frightening or
painful, and to be drawn to what feels good. Unfortunately, this human tendency causes us to separate
from our experience, and consequently, from ourselves and others. Lost in reactive thoughts, judgments,
and emotions, we erode the powerful confidence, wisdom and compassion which grow from the ability to be
with what is. At best, we end up like James Joyce's Mr. Duffy, who "always walked a slight distance
from himself."
So how do we meet whatever arises in experience, without judgment?
In this retreat, we will explore Buddhist practices which use the energy of active attention to
work with strong reactive emotions such as fear, anger and sorrow. The format will include meditation
instruction and practice, talks, experiential learning, and question-and-answer sessions in a small group
context. Participation would be suitable for both beginners and experienced meditators who wish to turn
up the heat on their practices. What matters most is a desire to cultivate the ability to show up more
fully and less reactively when things go contrary to what one wants or expects. A willingness to explore
meditation practice as a way of doing so is obviously necessary.
Past "success" or aptitude with meditation, however, is not required. Distractibility, agitation, dullness,
boredom, reactive emotion, and difficulty setting up conditions that support a practice are all common roadblocks.
The beauty of the Buddhist path is that the mud of our lives becomes the ground of transformation, the nutrient
which helps the lotus bloom. Pragmatic remedies for these problems will be offered and experimented with during
the weekend.
Recommended reading prior to the retreat includes Chapters 1-3 in the book Wake Up to Your Life by my
teacher, Ken McLeod. Ken received complete transmission of the essential teachings of the Karma Kagyu and
Shangpa traditions of Tibetan Buddhism as well as authorization to transmit these teachings to students from
Kalu Rinpoche. To order the book and learn more about a pragmatic Buddhist approach developing on Western ground,
go to www.unfetteredmind.com.
The methods within this book are meant to be worked deeply, sequentially, systematically. As such, it is more
of a manual rather than "a read." It serves as a practice guide for groups who for various reasons prefer more
intimate practice contexts, or who are distant from traditional practice settings. Each chapter might take anywhere
from three months to a year to work with. For those interested, the May retreat could serve as a foundational
workshop for a series of intensive ongoing classes on Hornby, which I would facilitate several times yearly.
Practical Matters
Enrollment will be limited. To ensure a space, contact Michelle St. Pierre of deerheart sanctuary at 250-335-0952,
or at deerheartsanctuary@yahoo.com.
A fee of $150 for both days is suggested (no one will be turned away for lack of funds). Accommodation is available at deerheart
including a cozy caravan and overnight camping. Other lodging can be found at local B&B's. Vegetarian lunch will be provided.
There will be free time in the evenings to enjoy the forests and beaches all around the island. Because attention
will be our main way of working, you will be asked to arrive as rested as possible, and to abstain from alcohol and
medically unnecessary substances during that weekend.
If you would like to stay overnight at deerheart, please contact Michelle for further information on food, accomodations, etc.
If you are coming from off-island, please check the ferry schedules to allow enough time for arrival and departure.
If necessary, ending time on Sunday will be adjusted to allow for time to get to the last ferry.
What to Bring
Some meditation cushions and chairs will be available, but if you have a cushion of your own and its easy to bring,
please do! If it would be better for you to meditate in a laying down position, feel free to bring a yoga mat and/or blanket.
Also bring a notebook and pens, any water or snacks you would like, and clothes for variable weather, including
warm socks. Shoes that are easy to slip on and off but sturdy enough to walk on forest trails would be helpful.
Some Inner Preparation
Please spend some time contemplatively holding these questions and then writing a few words in answer to each:
- Most people want something when they begin a new activity - or sustain a long-lived one. What do you want from meditation practice?
- For how much of your life are you present? Where are you most of the time when you are not present?
- How do you react when things go contrary to expectations?
- How do these reactions impact your relationship to others, to your own well-being, to your work, community, etc.
- If you have an established meditation practice: what difficulties do you encounter in your practice and how do you address them? To what extent does your practice serve waking up; to what degree does it fall into a habit of arranging a comfortable or predictable experience for oneself?
If you have any questions about the retreat for Lynn, you can email her at monkeypuzl@aol.com (please refer to deerheart in the subject line)
or call 415-552-5773. To enroll and for practical/logistical information, contact Michelle St. Pierre at deerheartsanctuary@yahoo.com
or at 250-335-0952.
Cost: Suggested donation of $150 for weekend, no one turned away for lack of funds

PARTING THE VEIL: An Exploration of Buddhist and Shamanic Paths of Attention
What is precious
inside us does not
care to be known
by the mind
in ways that diminish
its presence.
-David Whyte,poet
No problem was ever solved
by the same consciousness
that created it.
-William McDonough,Engineer, Futurist
Both Buddhism and Shamanism cultivate attention as a tool for clearing obstacles to presence, well-being, and
compassion. In this two-part workshop, we will explore both gradual, stabilizing practices drawn from Buddhist sources,
as well as the catalytic tool of shamanic journeying.
The intention is not psychic tourism, but rather to develop ways to identify and dismantle conditioned habits of
reactivity, recover lost selves and power, experience directly the mystery of being.
If you would like to get outside the box of your usual perceptions; develop a more conscious relationship to
power and attention; and contact sources of energy, insight, healing and wholeness on behalf of yourself and
others, please join us. Opt for either Part 1, or both days. A $75 per day donation is suggested. No one
will be turned away for lack of funds. Those who have taken Part 1 are welcome to repeat for a suggested $25
donation for Part 1, if you care to donate, and /or add Part 2. Some overnight camping available.
Cost: Suggested donation $75 per day ($25 for first day repeats)

Shantakaram Chants & Mantras Workshop
With Nadaka & Gopika
Vedic Mantras are pure sounds that were heard by the Rishis in ancient times.
They carry a powerful energy that has been passed down over milleneums as seeds of divine knowledge.
An eternal bridge from the past to the future, Sound, Music and Mantras remain a timeless expression of man's
aspiration to transcend himself and experience a sense of oneness with all. Above and beyound religion
we sing these mantras as an invocation to our highest inner guide.
Workshop at deerheart - Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Gita Yawaste
Gitz Yawaste Concert
A celebration of spiritual diversity in chant.
Gita Yawaste is an unlikely grouping of musicians brought together by guitarist/vocalist
Phil Rossner in order to do chant/song from all spiritual traditions. Their name, Gita Yawaste,
reflects what they are wishing to convey - a celebration of spiritual diversity. "Gita" is Sanskrit
for "song" and Yawaste is Lakota for "blessing".

Crystal Journey with Quartz Crystal Bowls & Paiste Gongs
Presented by David Hickey
The Crystal Journey Mission Statement: To create expansive, improvised and beautiful music, to awaken
consciousness, to promote peace and to restore balance of the self and the planet.
What You Can Expect
The shows will take place in two 40 to 50 minute sets. David's usual set up includes 15-20
quartz crystal bowls, 8-10
Paiste Planet gongs, a vibraphone and an assortment of other tuned
percussion instruments. Nothing is amplified, pre-recorded or rehearsed. Each set and performance
is sonically pure and unique. David records the shows on his high quality portable recorder and
can make that recording available to you.
We invite you to take a seat or lay down as close to the instruments as possible to get the
greatest effect. Remember to bring a yoga matt, blanket and/or pillow as most venues will have floor
space to lay down. Chairs for regular seating are also available.
Here's an example of what to expect.
